Kurjey Lhakhang: Sacred Ground Imbued with Guru Rinpoche's Blessing Guide

Kurjey Lhakhang is one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan, located in the picturesque Bumthang Valley. This complex of three temples is revered for its association with Guru Rinpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. The name "Kurjey" translates to "body imprint," referring to a rock inside one of the temples that bears the imprint of Guru Rinpoche's body. For pilgrims and tourists alike, Kurjey Lhakhang offers a profound spiritual experience and a glimpse into Bhutan's rich Buddhist heritage. The history of Kurjey Lhakhang dates back to the 8th century when Guru Rinpoche meditated in a cave at the site. According to legend, he subdued a local demon and left his body imprint on the rock. The oldest of the three temples, the Guru Lhakhang, was built in 1652 by Minjur Tempa, the first Penlop (governor) of Trongsa. The second temple, the Sampa Lhakhang, was built in 1900 by the first King of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck. The third temple, recently constructed under the patronage of the Queen Mother, Ashi Kesang Choden Wangchuck, is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche. Visitors to Kurjey Lhakhang can explore the three temples, each with its unique architectural style and religious significance. The Guru Lhakhang houses the sacred cave with Guru Rinpoche's body imprint. The Sampa Lhakhang is believed to have the power to grant wishes. The newly built temple showcases exquisite murals and statues. Pilgrims often circumambulate the temples, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. The annual Kurjey Tsechu festival, held in the autumn, is a vibrant celebration featuring masked dances and religious performances.
